# __KSBY Interview__

When the pandemic first shutdown the entire country local SLO media outlet KSBY 
was looking for a hot scoop and I was more than happy to share how the club was doing.

of my roommate playing a ranked game. The Cal Poly Esports club advisor hated the article though.

Those Times the Local Media Goes Gaming


Once I got to UC Davis I picked up right where I left off with broadcasting. I secured a "studio" (more like a closet), 
recruited a team of casters, observers, and producers (shout out to the crew they're amazing), and got to work. 

The first broadcast series the team and I tackled were the UCD Rec Esports tournaments. These were intramural esports 
tournaments like SLOLCS, and it was an easy conversation with them to put the games up on Twitch. 

These tournaments were geared towards being learning experiences rather than pedal to the metal show off my production arsenal. 
80% of UCD's casters and observers had never done casting or observing before. 
I mainly focused on the broadcasts being an educational

Game for a Cause was a great opportunity. I was always looking to involve more communities into Cal Poly Esports 
and offering to broadcast GFAC was a great way to do so. The Smash Club at Cal Poly always had great engagement 
with their tournaments and they were super fun to talk to. The passion was clear, and I believe that it showed in 
this broadcast. 

This was my first in-person broadcast and it was great to be able to see the people I was commentating over. 
Having that human connection makes the event that much more dynamic. When you get to see a pop-off in person 
it makes it that much more special. 

Astute viewers will notice I did cut the broadcast short of the tournament actually ending though. 
That was because one of the players decided to throw a temper tantrum and literally run away before he 
completed the rest of his matches. With the broadcast having gone on for 11 hours at this point, 
and after 40 minutes of waiting for him to come back with the tournament organizers 
not being willing to move on without him, I decided to call it a day.

I don't have much to say about SLOLCS 2022 but I am very proud of how it went. Some fun moments and memories

It's impossible to run tryouts that actually find the most skilled players when broadcasting it. 

Tryouts and Tournaments Don't Work But They are Entertaining

Scouting Grounds 2021


It's relatively easy to convince a bunch of people who usually don't participate in video game tournaments 
to play in a video game tournament when they're not allowed to do anything else. 

That was basically how Cultural Cup successfully happened in 2021. Usually spring quarter for Cal Poly means 
outdoor activities like bonfires, hikes, intermural sports, etc. When a pandemic is raging full force those 
activities are no longer options. Esports was one of the only ways to interact with people, 
and you bet your ass I capitalized on that. 

Valorant had just dropped the year before and that was the new, hot game to play on campus. 
The LOL viewership and player signups were dramatically reduced compared to the previous year 
while Valorant soared beyond what anyone could have anticipated. 

The storylines for some of the Valorant teams were also way more engaging and I was getting the hang of 
working and building on them. Producing, casting, and observing made focusing and honing my skills on 
just one of those three things difficult, but it was a great way to familiarize myself with 
broadcasting a genre other than MOBAs.

I am forever grateful to the cultural club members who volunteered their time to this event. 
It was so refreshing and exciting to see so many new faces be able to stay in touch via esports. 

Cultural Cup 2021


SLOLCS 2021 is where my production started to emulate some level of professionalism. 
We had clean graphics, good, non-intrusive sponsor placement, and no technical errors. 

It was interesting conducting this event during the middle of the pandemic and I consider 
SLOLCS 2021 to be the tournament that really showed the importance of esports in the Cal Poly community. 
Not only were we one of the only events happening within the campus ecosystem, we were boasting incredible 
engagement and consistent viewership with the event.

Everything came together for this event from the players, to the production crew, to the viewers, and 
for the first time I really felt like I was doing something good with Cal Poly Esports. 
It also led to me getting a job with CCI, which is a plus of course.
